Centenary's Continuing Education Office to Offer
"Dogs Days of Summer" Workshops in August

For those who have seen all the new summer movies and television re-runs, read all the latest bestsellers and find it too hot to paint the house, the Centenary College Office of Continuing Education has other possibilities to salvage the rest of the summer.

It is offering its new "Dog Days of Summer" Workshops throughout August. It's a "great way to beat the boredom and the heat" said Kathleen Smith, Centenary's newly appointed director of continuing education.

Workshops and short courses are:

  • Children's Art Camp -- For ages 10-13, 9 a.m. - noon Aug. 5-9 in Turner Art Center with instructor Kathryn Usher. The $85 cost includes supplies.

  • Genealogy for Beginners -- Get started constructing a family tree; 4-6 p.m. August 5-6 and 12-13 in Jackson Hall with instructor Margery Wright. Enrollment limited to 25 participants. Cost $40.

  • Painting with Paper -- 9 a.m. - noon on Saturday, Aug. 10 in the Center for Extended Learning, 2910 Centenary, with instructor Kathleen Smith, who will demonstrate her technique for collage on canvas. The $25 cost per person includes materials. Parents or grandparents accompanying one or more registered children between the ages of 6 and 10 may participate free.

  • Exploring the Internet -- 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 17 in Mickle Hall with instructor Dwight Seuser, who will cover the basics of exploring the world wide web as well as web protocol, web pages and searches. Cost is $35, with parents or grandparents admitted free when accompanying a registered child between the ages of 9 and 12.

  • The Living Will -- 9 - 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23 in the Center for Extended Learning with instructor Judd Tooke. The seminar is designed for those interested in creating a Living Will in Louisiana. Cost is $15.

  • Self Discovery Through Poetry -- Hear readings and write personal feelings and experiences; 10 a.m. - noon on Saturday, Aug. 24 in the Center for Extended Learning with instructor Cynthia Gustavson. Cost is $20. Book is available at class.

  • Novel Tea: The Patron Saint of Liars by Ann Patchett -- 10 a.m. - noon on Friday, Aug. 30 in the Center for Extended Learning . "Novel Teas" promote interesting conversation with interesting people about good books. Participants are asked to read the book prior to the workshop and come prepared to discuss it over tea, coffee, soft drinks, water and a selection of tea snacks. Cost is $10.

  • Bees and Bee-keeping -- 1 - 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30 at the Center for Extended Learning and 10 - 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Hummer and Sons Honey Farm in Bossier City with instructor Billy Hummer, who will provide basic information and demonstrate the honey extraction process. Enrollment is limited to 12. Cost is $15.
