The strange life and writing career of 19th Century poet Emily Dickinson will be the topic Thursday (Feb. 22) at a public convocation at Centenary College.
Dr. Elliot Engel, international lecturer, author and professor at North Carolina State University, will speak at the 11:20 a.m. event in Kilpatrick Auditorium. He will use biographical anecdotes and literary analysis to explain the reasons for Dickinson's enduring popularity with modern audiences.
Engel earned his B.A. at Indiana University and the M.A. and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at the University of California at Los Angeles. While at UCLA he won the university's Outstanding Teacher Award.
His books have been published by both British and American presses, and his articles have appeared in numerous magazines, including Newsweek. His mini-lecture series on Dickens appeared on PBS Television stations throughout the country.
For his scholarship and teaching, he has received North Carolina's Adult Education Award and the Victorian Society Award of Merit. He has lectured throughout the nation, in Europe and in Japan.
The program is free and open to the public as a service of the Centenary College Convocations Committee.
