Martha Chaney of Centenary and Martin Erik Nyberg of Louisiana State University have been awarded "Winning for Life" scholarships, sponsored jointly by Entergy Corp. and the NCAA Foundation.

Chaney and Nyberg are the two regional winners from the four-state area that includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and southeast Texas. They are also the state winners from Louisiana. They will each receive a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship, $2,000 as state winners and an additional $3,000 as regional winners.

Chaney is a native of Richardson, Texas and a soccer star at Centenary while Nyberg, who hails from Gothenberg, Sweden, is a standout in swimming at LSU.

Designed to encourage collegiate student-athletes to excel in mathematics, science, engineering, computer science, and related fields, the "Winning for Life" program honors the top male and female graduating scholar-athletes from NCAA-member universities in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and southeast Texas.

A select committee reviewed the nominees and chose the top male and female athletes from each state and, from there, the top male and female student-athlete from the four-state region.

Entergy Corporation, a worldwide energy company, has provided an endowment to the NCAA Foundation to recognize excellence in education and athletics.

Chaney maintains a 3.91 grade point average and has served as goalkeeper on the soccer team. She has been named to both the national and Centenary's Dean's Lists, as well as selected for the Trans America Conference honor roll and the conference's All-Academic team. Chaney has also received the U.S. Natural Science Award and was a CoSIDA Academic All-American for District 6.

She finished the 1995 season ranked No. 1 in the Central Region in goalkeeping and finished in the top 20 in the nation. She was also named to the first team All-Trans America Conference Team. In 1993, she set a school record with 109 saves for the year.

In addition, Matt Thornton, captain of Centenary College's soccer team and an applied science major, was nominated for the "Winning for Life" scholarship.
