SHREVEPORT, LA -- A Centenary College physics student from Austin, Texas, Richard Hasty, has been awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, the premiere undergraduate award of its type in the fields of science, mathematics and engineering.

The one- or two-year scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,000 per year.

Hasty is one of 264 students selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,200 nominated. All were mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The scholarship program, which honors Sen. Barry M. Goldwater, is designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Hasty is a junior at Centenary and a graduate of Lyndon B. Johnson High School in Austin. His parents are George and Louise Hasty of Austin.

Hasty's is the third Goldwater Scholarship that has been awarded to a Centenary College student in the last five years.
