Canticum novum, the 24-singer chamber ensemble of the University of North Texas, will perform at 3:30 p.m. March 13 at Centenary College.
The program, free and open to the public, will be held in the Hurley Recital Hall.
The ensemble consists principally of graduate students and upperclassmen chosen on the basis of a rigorous and highly selective audition. Most of the members are students of voice or conducting.
Conductor will be Henry Gibbons, associate professor of choral music at UNT, who received his early training at Stanford and Harvard universities, and holds the Artis Diploma from the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt, Germany. In Frankfurt he studied with the internationally renowned Bach specialist Helmuth Rilling. In addition to his duties at UNT, he is musical director of the Denton Bach Society.
The program will include "Ave Maria, gratia plena" by Thomas Luis da Victoria, "Alma redemptoris Mater" by Johannes Ockeghem, "Tantum ergo sacramentum" by Anton Bruckner, "Hear my prayer, O God" by Henry Purcell, "Motets pour un temps de penitence" by Francis Poulenc as well as works by Rheinberger, Debussy, Isaac, Certon and Brahms.
