Eminent vision scientist Dr. Dianna Ammons Redburn will be the speaker on Saturday, May 4 when Centenary College holds its commencement at 2:30 p.m. in the Gold Dome. Some 150 students are candidates for degree this year, Centenary's 171st academic year.
Dr. Redburn's work on the mammalian retina established her as one of the early leaders in retinal research, and she has continued to make major contributions for the past 21 years. Her research has contributed to the understanding of how visual information is processed.
Her work has helped lead to new areas of research, in particular an appreciation of neurotransmitters, and she continues to break new ground, using techniques of tissue culture, intracellular injections and molecular biology.
Dr. Redburn is professor and director of basic research in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas -- Houston Medical School. She is also assistant dean for research training and is the Jules and Doris Stein Research to Prevent Blindness Professor of Ophthalmology.
She earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Centenary in 1964 and the Ph.D. in biology-neurobiology from the University of Kansas in 1972, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in psychobiology at the University of California, Irvine in 1974.
She is a member of the Centenary College Board of Trustees and the President's Advisory Council.
Dr. Redburn's research has been supported through a variety of grants and awards totaling nearly $5 million. She has authored or co-authored hundreds of publications, including three books and scores of refereed original articles and journals. She has appeared on symposia in the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America.
