Joel R. Wincowski of Canton, N.Y., will join the administrative staff of Centenary College of Louisiana on July 1 as the college's new dean of enrollment management.

Wincowski is currently dean of admissions and financial aid at St. Lawrence University, a private liberal arts institution in upstate New York. Prior to joining St. Lawrence in 1991, he was dean of institutional advancement and dean of admissions and financial aid at Paul Smith's College, New York; director of enrollment management at Utica College of Syracuse University; director of admissions and financial aid at Alvernia College, and director of financial aid at Albright College, both in Reading, Pa.

At St. Lawrence University, Wincowski directed all operations related to attaining enrollment goals and financial aid distribution. He created and implemented an innovative, technologically advanced pre-prospect and prospect management technique which yielded a 29.7 percent increase in freshman applications and a significant increase in average SAT scores and rank in class.

He also developed a new series of award-winning publications used in a sophisticated timed mailing system. Among his awards are the 1993 Silver Medal for Overall Student Recruitment Programs and the 1986 Gold Medal for Student Marketing Improvement, both from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). He has also received top awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, the Admissions Marketing Report and the Golden Triangle Advertising Awards.

His memberships include CASE, the National Association for College Admissions Counseling and the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. He is the author of Turnabout's Fair Play: Rating the College Guidebooks, which was published in the Baltimore Evening Sun and reprinted in several national publications. He has also authored articles in Admissions Marketing Report and College Marketing Alert.

Wincowski has served as a consultant or guest lecturer at Erskine College and Anderson College, both in South Carolina; Paul Smith s College, New York; Mississippi University for Women; Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Utica College, New York.

He earned the bachelor of science degree in psychology and the master of education degree with a double concentration in student personnel services in higher education and counseling, both from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.

Married and the father of four children, Wincowski coaches community baseball and basketball teams. His wife, Carol, is an elementary school teacher.

He assumes the position being vacated by Dr. Dorothy Gwin, who announced earlier this year her desire to return to teaching. In the fall, she will join the faculty in the Department of Education.
