Author George Garrett, whose most recent novel The King of Babylon Shall Not Come Against You was published this year by Harcourt Brace, will read from his work Thursday, Oct. 10, at 11:10 a.m. in Kilpatrick Auditorium on the Centenary College campus. Sponsored by the Convocations Committee, the event is free and open to the public.
Born in 1929 in Orlando, Fla., Garrett is the prolific author of eight novels, seven books of poetry, and eight volumes of short fiction. He is best known for his three historical novels set in Elizabethan England. Death of the Fox, about Sir Walter Raleigh and Elizabeth I, was a best-seller and the main selection of Book-of-the-Month Club in 1971. Among his novels set in the South are The King of Babylon Shall Not Come Against You and Do, Lord, Remember Me (1965). An Evening Performance: New And Selected Short Stories (1985) is being reprinted this month by Louisiana State University Press in its distinguished Voices of the South series.
Garrett was awarded the Ph.D. in English by Princeton University after the second of his Elizabethan novels, The Succession: A Novel of Elizabeth and James was published in 1983.
His numerous literary awards include the Rome Prize of the Academy of Arts and Letters, the Ingersoll Foundation's T. S. Eliot Award for Creative Writing, and the P.E.N. Bernard Malamud Award for Short Fiction. He has been since 1984 the Henry Hoyns Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Virginia.
His reading at Centenary is a featured event in a two-week tour of Southern culture by the Danish Association of Teachers of English, forty of whose members are guests of the college from Oct. 5-19.
