SHREVEPORT, LA -- Dr. Julio Ramirez, founding president of Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience, will speak on "Is a Broken Brain Doomed to Dysfunction?" April 10 at a convocation at Centenary College. The program, free and open to the public, will be held at 11:10 a.m. in Mickle Hall Room 114.
Ramirez does research on recovery of function after central nervous system damage, especially to the hippocampus, the development and aging of the central nervous system, learning and memory.
He graduated from Fairfield University in Connecticut with a B.S. in biopsychology, and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Clark University, Worcester, Mass. He conducted postdoctoral study at MIT in neuroscience and has been a Visiting Scientist to the Institute of Medical Psychology in Magdeburg, Germany; Department of Neurobiology at Yale University; Institut Fur Medizinische Psychologie, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen in Munich, West Germany; Department of Psychology at MIT; Department of Neurological Surgery at University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville, Va., and Laboratoire de Neurophysiologie, Institut de Neurochimie, Centre Nationale de Recherche Scientifique, Strasbourg, France.
Ramirez was North Carolina Professor of the Year in 1989, founded the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (1991-1994) and is a full professor, teaching at Davidson College since 1986.
