SHREVEPORT, LA -- Renowned pianist Junko Ueno Garrett will present an "All American Piano Recital" at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 2 in Centenary College's Hurley Auditorium. The program is free and open to the public.
Ms. Garrett was born in Japan and trained at the prestigious Toho Conservatory. As the winner of several competitions, she earned performance opportunities at an early age, including recitals and concertos.
She was an experienced performer in Japan before moving to the United States in 1989. Her debut in South America was in 1992 and in France in 1994. She has also maintained a busy performance schedule in the United States.
In 1994, she was a prize winner at the Florida National Piano Competition. In 1995, she made her return debut in Japan as the pianist with the Belrose Duo. In 1996, she toured in France and Japan.
Since 1995, Ms. Garrett has been a correspondent to the Japanese piano magazine Chopin, introducing American compositions, musicians and schools to Japanese readers. She is a doctoral candidate at Rice University in the studio of John Perry.
During her Centenary performance, Ms. Garrett will perform Ricercare and Toccata on a theme from The Old Maid and the Thief by Gian-Carlo Menotti; Seven Preludes by Richard Cumming; Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo by Aaron Copland; Excursions, Op. 20 by Samuel Barber; and Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.
