SHREVEPORT, LA -- During the week of Jan. 27-31, Centenary College will host its 38th and 39th Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows -- two well-known Washington journalists -- continuing its record of having hosted more Wilson Fellows than any other college in the country.
Jane and Bob Levey will spend the week on campus and will speak publicly on "The Future of the Media" during a convocation at 11:10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 in Kilpatrick Auditorium. The program is free and open to the public.
Bob Levey, whose career with the Washington Post spans over 30 years, has covered sports, police and courts, politics and human interest as well as general assignments while working as reporter, editor and columnist. For 15 years he has written the daily column Bob Levey's Washington, which has regularly appeared adjacent to the columns of Jack Anderson and Erma Bombeck. He has also written in the past for Time, Fortune and Sports Illustrated.
Also experienced in radio and television, Levey hosts a general interest radio talk show featuring celebrity guests, issues, authors and listener calls. He is a weekly commentator on National Public Radio and is a freelance commentator on its news program All Things Considered.
Since February 1992 he has served as a rotating host on Talk Live, a cable television show reaching 30 million American homes, and has been a commentator, contributor, or correspondent on several other television programs.
He earned a B.A. degree from the University of Chicago and has served as an adjunct professor or guest lecturer in journalism at the University of Maryland, Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and Duke.
Levey will be available to discuss topics related to journalism, radio, television, sociology and current American politics, especially media and the presidential campaign, with Centenary students and faculty.
Since 1991, Mrs. Levey has been the managing editor of Washington History: Magazine of the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. A graduate of Wellesley College with an M.A. in history from George Washington University, she has broad experience in journalism as an editor, consultant, researcher and freelance writer.
Mrs. Levey has also worked with Education Week, Time-Life Books, the Washington Post, the Southland Family, Asia Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Brookings Institution and the Carnegie Endowment.
She will discuss topics that include freelance careers for journalists, careers for history majors outside academe, juggling the two-career family, issues in African American history, the American urban experience and recent American history and social change.
The Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows program brings leaders in their fields to the campuses of small liberal arts colleges for a week of classes, informal discussions with students and faculty and career counseling. Visiting fellows, who include cabinet level officers, corporate executives, newspaper editors and other professionals, are recruited for their ability to listen as well as to articulate ideas and are matched with liberal arts colleges chosen for their commitment to the goals of the program.
The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation has developed and conducted programs in higher education since 1945. Over 200 colleges have participated in the Visiting Fellows program since 1973, with Centenary College having hosted more Wilson Fellows than any other college in the nation.
