SHREVEPORT, LA -- Twenty students from Centenary College embarked on a course at the Summer Games of the Louisiana Special Olympics and ended up earning a Silver Medal themselves.

Members of Dr. Joyce Johnson's psychology class, "Co-Regulation in Mental Disabilities," became the recipients of the award for extraordinary work and outstanding dedication to Louisiana Special Olympics. The award was a surprise at the formal patron party at the end of the games, which were held on the Tulane University campus in New Orleans.

"They are wonderful," said Emmanuel Bourgeois, executive director of LSO, about the Centenary group. "We would love to have more like them."

Craig Sanders, LSO director of finance and operations, said the Centenary students "played a pivotal role in ensuring that the Summer Games were a success ... They handled the pressure and challenges with relentless effort and a great attitude. They are surely the leaders of tomorrow."

Members of the award-winning team spent a week before the Summer Games working at several schools with Special Olympics athletes who were preparing for the event. They then spent another week at Tulane working with various aspects of the event itself.

Centenary students participating were Catherine Green of Laurel, Miss.; Ali Harrelson of Covington, La.; Jimmy Jones and Catherine Scott, both of Bossier City, La.; Ian Sadler of Benton, La.; Jonathan King of Shreveport, La.; Amy Boltinghouse of Doyline, La.; Amanda Soderberg and Kathryn Barkley, both of Longview, Texas; Rebecca Harper, David Lynch and John Lynch, all of Dallas, Texas; Chris Brooking of Brandon, Miss.; Matthew Stephens and Leslie Gatlin, both of Baton Rouge, La.; Braden Davis of San Carlos, Calif.; Daniella Sarquiz of Kankakee, Ill.; Erin Sansalone of Slidell; Timothy Lee of Mineola, Texas; and Todd Martinez of Chalmette, La.

Centenary College of Louisiana, founded in 1825, is the nation's oldest private liberal arts college west of the Mississippi.
