SHREVEPORT, LA -- Three new members have been elected to the Board of Trustees of Centenary College of Louisiana. They are Loy Beene Moore of Bossier City, Austin G. Robertson Jr. of Shreveport, and Miriam Mandel Sklar of Shreveport.
Their election was announced by Centenary President Kenneth L. Schwab and Board Chairman Roy S. Hurley following confirmation by the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church on June 4.
Loy Beene Moore
Moore is president and general manager of the Haynesville Mercantile Co., a family holding company, and is vice president and director of the Shreveport Captains baseball team.
A graduate of C.E. Byrd High School, he earned a degree in accounting from Southern Methodist University in 1959. Upon graduation, he was employed by the Bossier Bank & Trust Co. in 1959 and 1960, and became a bank examiner for the State on Louisiana in early 1960. He returned to Bossier Bank & Trust in 1965 as an assistant cashier and later became comptroller and director of operations there.
In 1970, Moore became vice president and cashier of Louisiana Bank & Trust Co. Two years later, he was named to the board of directors. He became president of Louisiana Bank in 1975, and president and chief executive officer in 1977 prior to resigning in 1981 to pursue personal business interests.
Moore's civic activities include having served as chairman of the Bossier Family YMCA Board, and president of the Northwest Louisiana Development Center, the Bossier Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Bossier Economic Development Foundation. He has been a member of the boards of directors of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, the Shreveport-Bossier Junior Achievement Board, and the Greater Shreveport Economic Development Foundation.
He is currently a board member of the Credit Bureau of Greater Shreveport, the Red River Valley Association, and the Louisiana State Fair, which he served twice as president. He is a member of the 8th Air Force Consultation Committee, the Committee of 100, a director of the Military Affairs Council and former president of the Eagles.
He is married to the former Peggy Hilburn of Bossier City and they have two children. The Moores attend First United Methodist Church of Bossier, where Moore has served on the Board of Trustees.
Austin G. Robertson Jr.
Robertson has been a partner in the firm Robertson, Bailes & McClelland, LLP, since the firm purchased BDO Seidman in 1993. Formerly, he was with BDO Seidman; Stewart, Robertson & Co.; Shreveport Business Investment Co., Inc.; and W. T. Fincher, CPA.
He served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve, and served on active duty with the U.S. Army Transportation Corps, attaining the rank of captain.
Robertson is currently chairman of the President's Advisory Council and the Planned Giving Council of Centenary College, a member of the board of directors of the Louisiana Council on Compulsive Gambling, and vice president of the Sales and Marketing Executives organization. He has served as treasurer of the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, the Volunteers of America, Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, Shreveport Symphony, Port Players and Shreveport Historic Preservation Society.
His memberships also include the Small Firm Advocacy Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Rotary Club of Downtown Shreveport, The Shreveport Club and the First United Methodist Church.
He is a former president of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants, Advisory Board of the Salvation Army of Shreveport/Bossier, Junior Achievement of North Louisiana, Ark-La-Tex Tax Institute and the Shreveport Chapter of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants.
Robertson has also worked as a division chairman for the United Way and the Centenary Great Teachers-Scholars Fund, and has been chairman of the Continuing Education Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
A graduate of Fair Park High School, he earned the B.B.A. degree from Tulane University and the M.B.A. from Centenary College. He is a Certified Public Accountant, a Personal Financial Specialist and a Certified Valuation Analyst.
He is married to the former Sandra Jones, CPA, and they have four children.
Miriam Mandel Sklar
Miriam Mandel Sklar has been a Shreveport civic leader and community volunteer for many years.
An active supporter and benefactor of the Shreveport Symphony and Shreveport Opera, she has chaired many functions through the years, including the 1996 Symphony Ball. She is an honorary board member of Shreveport Opera. A past president of the Opera Guild, she started the Guild's first Style Show and chaired the first Les Boutiques de Noel. For her service to Shreveport Opera, she was awarded the Eugenie Somdal Memorial Award in 1985.
Her memberships include the Shreveport Country Club, Shreveport Club, Cambridge Club, Demoiselle Club, Cotillion Club, B'nai Zion Congregation, Agudath Achim Congregation and the Shreveport Jewish Federation.
Appointed by former Louisiana Governor John McKeithen, Mrs. Sklar served on the board of the Louisiana Education and Television Authority. She is also a former board member of the American Cancer Society and March of Dimes, and she has volunteered for and chaired annual sales for the Shreveport Association for the Blind.
The widow of Albert Sklar, she has three children.
The new trustees will join the Centenary Board at its next quarterly meeting, which is scheduled for Oct. 16
Officers of the Centenary Board are Roy S. Hurley, chairman; William G. Anderson, vice chairman; Charles Ellis Brown, vice chairman of finance; Taylor F. Moore, secretary; and Edward J. Crawford III, treasurer, all of Shreveport.
