43-Year Professor Dr. Lee Morgan to Be Honored During Founders' Day and Alumni and Family Weekend March 13-16 at Centenary

SHREVEPORT, LA -- The theme for the 1996-97 academic year at Centenary College, "Change," will also be the theme for the college's Founders' Day and Alumni and Family Weekend celebration taking place Thursday, March 13 through Sunday, March 16.

The celebration will begin with Founders' Day on March 13. Retiring Centenary professor Dr. Lee Morgan, a faculty member for the past 43 years, will speak at an 11 a.m. convocation in Brown Memorial Chapel. The program is free and open to the public.

Dr. Morgan, the first and only holder of the Willie Cavett and Paul Marvin Brown, Jr. Chair of English, which was inaugurated at Centenary in 1980, will also be honored at various other times during the weekend. A specialist in the 18th Century literature of Samuel Johnson, he has participated in a number of visiting professorships around the world. has served as Tutor at St. John's College, Oxford University, in the British Studies at Oxford Program. He is co-author of several books, and has coordinated the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows Program at Centenary since it began, bringing more Wilson Fellows to Centenary than to any other college or university in the nation.

On Friday, March 14, a reception and registration will be held at 5 p.m. in Hamilton Hall. Dinner will follow at 6 p.m. in the South Dining Room of the Bynum Commons Cafeteria. At 7 p.m., Dr. Hoyt Duggan, Centenary Class of 1960, a professor of English at the University of Virginia, will speak at a convocation in Brown Chapel.

On Saturday, a continental breakfast will be served in the Centenary Room, located in the North Dining Hall of the Bynum Commons Cafeteria, beginning at 9 a.m. It will be followed by a symposium consisting of a panel of Dr. Morgan's former students at 10 a.m.

At 11:30 a.m., the inauguration of the Quinq Club, those Centenary alumni celebrating their 50th year anniversary of graduation, will take place during a "Remember When" luncheon in the South Dining Hall.

From 1-2 p.m. there will be a reception honoring James Lobby Renovation donors in the James Residence Hall Lobby. Other events on Saturday include a tour of Shreveport via trolley given by Jimmy Turner '47, a professional step-on tour guide; several mini-courses, including tips on estate planning and a discussion on how cooking is different today; open houses by the Greek organizations and Choir; the Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet; and special 10th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 40th, and 50th anniversary reunion receptions throughout Shreveport.

On Sunday, there will be a reception in the Noel United Methodist Church Parlor at 9 a.m. followed by worship service at 10:50 a.m. At 4 p.m., the Centenary College Choir will perform Verdi's Requiem in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church.
