SHREVEPORT, LA -- Carrie Lynn Ferguson, a senior at Centenary College, will present a paper at the Rocky Mountain/South Central Section meeting of the Geological Society of America on Thursday, March 20.

The title of her poster paper is "Potential Heavy Metal Contamination from Mine Tailings, Zimapan Mining District, Mexico." The paper concerns the contamination by arsenic of the water supply within the Zimapan Mining District in the Mexican state of Hidalgo.

Two possible sources causing the contamination have been identified. Ferguson's study deals with one of these sources, rather large piles of mine tailings ranging in age from 300 years to present.
