SHREVEPORT, LA -- Today's announcement of the Nobel Prize for Physics has special meaning for students and faculty members at Centenary College and for the area residents who attended his lectures here last fall.
Nobel winner Dr. Steven Chu of Stanford University spoke publicly twice at Centenary College during his Oct. 28-29, 1996 campus visit. Dr. Chu is Theodore and Francis Geballe Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Stanford.
He won the Nobel Prize for his work on how to trap atoms and particles using laser light.
At Centenary, he spoke on "Applications of Laser Trapping and Cooling to Atom Interferometers and Polymer Physics" and "The Manipulation of Atoms, Molecules, and Particles with Laser Light," a presentation that addressed applications in chemistry, physics, biology and engineering. Students and faculty from Centenary and colleges and high schools throughout the region were invited to attend the free lecture series.
Dr. Chu's visit was made possible by a grant to the Centenary Departments of Chemistry and Physics from the Laser Science Division of the American Physical Society. The visit was arranged by Dr. Tom Ticich of Centenary, who is a member of the American Physical Society.
