Shenandoah Shakespeare Express Returns to Centenary College April 14-18

1998 Shenandoah Shakespeare Express

SHREVEPORT, LA -- The Harrisonburg, Va. tour group Shenandoah Shakespeare Express will perform at the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse in a highly anticipated return to Centenary College during the week of April 14-18.

Currently celebrating its 10th anniversary, Shenandoah Shakespeare Express first opened in 1988 with the showing of Richard III at a small Presbyterian church. The group is based in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and features 11 actors, three plays, and one simple idea: Shakespeare's plays work best when performed under the conditions for which they were originally designed--on a bare stage, surrounded by audience members who share the same light with the actors, who play several roles.

"Now, as then, we want to take Shakespeare to as many different people in as many different places as possible. And performing the plays as Shakespeare did keeps costs low and allows us to do just that. At the same time, our performances reach our audience in such a way that everyone can understand, and more importantly, enjoy, them," said Jim Warren, the company's managing director.

This spring the group's performances at Centenary will include The Taming of the Shrew, Measure for Measure and Richard III. All performances will be at the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse on the Centenary campus. Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, $7.50 for non-Centenary students and $5 for children under 12 years of age.

The dates, times, and plays to be performed are:

  • Tuesday, April 14, 7 p.m., The Taming of the Shrew
  • Wednesday, April 15, 7 p.m., Measure for Measure
  • Thursday, April 16, 7 p.m., Richard III
  • Friday, April 17, 7 p.m., The Taming of the Shrew
  • Saturday, April 18, 2 p.m., Measure for Measure
  • Saturday, April 18, 7 p.m., Richard III

Actors in the 1998 10th Anniversary Over the Hump Tour are Kate Norris, Centenary Alumna Heather Peak, Tom Summers, Jonathon Church, Michael Glenn, Walter Elder, Carl Martin, Tim Gore, Jessica Meyer, Kathryn L. Van Meter, and Scott Nath.

To reserve tickets, call the Centenary English Department at 318-869-5254 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. April 6-10 and April 13-17. Tickets may also be purchased at the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse box office the hour before each performance.
