Centenary Appoints Prysock Interim Softball Coach

SHREVEPORT, LA -- Centenary College director of athletics Russ Sharp has announced the hiring of Matt Prysock, effective Jan. 1, as the interim head softball coach.

Prysock replaces Michael Bastian who resigned Tuesday (Dec. 22, 1998) to accept a head coaching position in the Women's Professional Softball League.

Prysock spent the 1998 season as the assistant softball coach at Ranger College in Ranger, Texas before coming to Centenary this past June as an assistant to Bastian.

This will be the first head-coaching position for the 24-year-old Benton, Ark. native and 1996 Centenary graduate.

"This is a great opportunity for me at this point in my life," Prysock said. "I am excited to be the head coach at my alma mater. I think anyone would take advantage of this situation."

Prysock takes over a team that returns six players from last year's 18-48 campaign. "Our won-loss record does not indicate, how good our team is because we played one of the toughest schedules in the country last season," Prysock said. "Coach Bastian has brought in some really talented softball players. He has put Centenary on the map at the national level and I hope to maintain and build on the foundation he has established in Shreveport."

Prysock will make his head coaching debut, Feb. 5 when the Ladies host Louisiaiia Tech in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. That night will also mark the first time the Ladies will play under lights at the Centenary Softball Complex.

"Matt Prysock has been a fixture in the Centenary athletic program over the last several years except for his shift at Ranger College," Sharp said. "I'm pleased that we have an individual with the understanding of softball and the familiarity with our student-athletes as a current member our our staff. His transition into the position of interim head coach should be an easy one."
