" 'Tramps Abroad': The Literary Careers of Mark Twain and Jack London"

SHREVEPORT, LA -- The many literary and cultural connections between authors Mark Twain and Jack London will be discussed during a public lecture by Dr. Jeanne Campbell Reesman at 7 p.m. March 5 at Centenary College.
Dr. Reesman, a former Shreveporter and 1977 Centenary graduate, will speak on " 'Tramps Abroad': The Literary Careers of Mark Twain and Jack London," during the program in Kilpatrick Auditorium. The program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Jack London Research Center at Centenary.
Dr. Reesman is director of the Division of English, Classics, Philosophy and Communication at the University of Texas at San Antonio, a post she has held since 1994. She has published several books, including two co-authored with Dr. Earle Labor of Centenary, an internationally known London authority. Among her books are Jack London: A Student of the Short Fiction, forthcoming from Macmillan Publishers; Speaking the Other Self: American Women Writers (University of Georgia Press, 1997); Rereading Jack London, co-edited with Leonard Cassuto (Stanford University Press, 1996), and American Designs: The Late Novels of James and Faulkner (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1991).
Dr. Reesman has also collaborated with local colleagues as a co-author of the third and fourth editions of A Handbook of Critical Approaches to Literature, published by the Oxford University Press. The book is a Centenary project that has become a world classic, having been published in a half dozen foreign languages and selling over a quarter of a million copies. Co-authors are Dr. Labor and Dr. Lee Morgan of Centenary, Dr. Wilfred Guerin of LSU in Shreveport, and Dr. John Willingham, now retired from the University of Kansas.
Among her professional activities are service on the Executive Board of the American Literature Association and as executive coordinator, since 1990, of the Jack London Society. She earned national recognition with the Robert A. Miller Award from the College English Association for the best article published in the CEA Critic during 1991. She was also honored in 1995 by the Jack London Foundation of Glen Ellen, Calif., as the "Jack London Woman of the Year."
Dr. Reesman earned the B.A. in English, magna cum laude, from Centenary in 1977, the M.A. in English from Baylor University in 1979 and the Ph.D. in English in 1984 from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Evan Campbell Jr. of Shreveport.
