SHREVEPORT, LA -- Shreveport Mayor Bo Williams has declared Saturday (Oct. 10) as "Dr. Dana Kress Day" in the city of Shreveport.

The day is in honor of Dr. Kress, associate professor of French at Centenary College, who Thursday was named the Louisiana Professor of the Year for 1998-99.

Centenary President Kenneth Schwab will mark the day on campus with a special presentation to Dr. Kress at 1 p.m. during a meeting of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL). The CODOFIL group is holding its annual board meeting at Centenary from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Bynum Commons.

In his proclamation, Mayor Williams cited Dr. Kress's "skill as an extraordinary teacher," his students' record of acceptance at prestigious graduate schools, and his development of a student-run French language newspaper and radio program at Centenary that "has become recognized nationally and internationally."

Since the U.S. Professors of the Year program is the nation's most highly respected program to recognize outstanding college professors, the mayor said, he urges "all citizens and the Centenary faculty, staff and students to recognize his many accomplishments and to thank him for his hard work and dedication to the students of Centenary College."
