SHREVEPORT, LA -- Eighteen Centenary College students and the college chaplain are giving up some sleep and class time during the next four days to contribute to the Hurricane Floyd relief effort.
The group will leave Shreveport Thursday afternoon (Oct. 14) for Wallace, N.C., a small town whose residents lost nearly everything. After a nearly all-night bus ride, they will work Friday and Saturday with the Volunteers in Missions Relief of the United Methodist Church before returning on Sunday.
They will be volunteering in the Red Cross Relief Center and in homes damaged by flood waters, said the Rev. Jack O'Dell, chaplain and organizer of the trip. "The students will be enduring a long bus ride there and back…and they also must keep up with their required work during their absence," he said.
O'Dell coordinated the service trip with the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, with transportation costs paid in part by the Women's Endowment Quorum at Centenary.
The student volunteers are Tracy Autrey, Beth Blackburn, Sarah Danzy, Rachel Day, Jennifer Ewing, Lisa Game, Sarah Gronning, Peter Guarisco, Mattie Hartman, Tonya Jordon, Tricia Lavin, Jeanette Lyles, Susanna Miller, Jessica Secrest, Joanna Tagert, Jennifer Trahan, Natasha Wilson, and Randy Wright.
