SHREVEPORT, LA--Michael G. Moran II, an A student at St. Mary's High School in Natchitoches, La., with a strong record of community leadership and service, is the new On Your Side Scholarship recipient at Centenary College. The announcement was made March 1 by the sponsors of the award, KTBS-TV Channel 3 and Bank One, and Centenary President Kenneth L. Schwab.

The scholarship, valued at $19,100, covers tuition, room and board for the 2000-01 year at Centenary. It recognizes students who have made a difference in their schools and communities.

As president of the Natchitoches Mayor's Youth Council, Moran has met with local officials and teens to promote an understanding of local government and the needs of local youth. He has served as group leader for the past two summers at programs of the Catholic Heart Work Camp. Their mission was to try to raise the standard of living for the poor and disabled, first in Newkirk, Okla., and then in Laredo, Texas. He has also been active in academic activities, athletic competition and leadership roles at St. Mary's, which he has attended since the first grade.

Moran is the son of Michael Gerald and Dianne Velasquez Moran of Natchez, La. He plans to pursue a career in public or government service.

Dr. Schwab announced the award during the 11:30 a.m. KTBS newscast on March 1. Anchor Gwen Campbell interviewed Moran and his mother, as well as George Nelson Jr. of Bank One and Edwin Wray of KTBS-TV. Moran was also featured during a special report on the station's 5 p.m. newscast.

He is the third student to receive the On Your Side Scholarship. Previous awards went to Jessica Walker of Plain Dealing Academy in 1999 and Christy Price of Byrd High School in 1998.
