Barbara Bush Speaks, Centenary College Awards Diplomas to 196 during Spring Commencement Exercises Concluding 175th Anniversary Celebration

SHREVEPORT, LA -- Former First Lady Barbara Bush delivered the address when Centenary College concluded its year-long 175th anniversary celebration with special Year 2000 graduation exercises at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2000 in Hirsch Coliseum.

Honorary doctorates were awarded to Mrs. Bush and to author Ernest J. Gaines of Lafayette, La., and Centenary trustee Samuel P. Peters of Shreveport. The college also recognized Dr. James Farrar, professor of health and exercise science, who retired in May after 23 years at Centenary.

A total of 193 students earned degrees, including 146 bachelor's degrees and 47 master's.

Graduating with honors were 10 students who earned their diplomas summa cum laude, with grade-point averages of 3.9 or higher; 21 with the magna cum laude designation, 3.7 to 3.89 GPAs; and 22 who achieved cum laude, 3.5 to 3.69 GPAs. They are:
