SHREVEPORT, LA -- Victoria Kintner, a senior at Caddo Magnet High School, has earned a $1,000 scholarship in the Laws of Life Essay Contest, sponsored nationally by The Templeton Foundation and locally by Centenary College and The Wilcox Foundation.
Two other students captured $750 scholarships. They are Kevin Allen and Mallori Brandon, both of Captain Shreve High School.
A total of 12 essays were judged outstanding from among entries solicited from throughout Caddo Parish. They will be published in a commemorative booklet that will be widely distributed to schools and libraries in the area.
All 12 student writers, along with their parents, teachers and counselors, were honored during an Awards Reception held yesterday (Thursday, May 18) in Centenary's Bynum Commons.
In addition to Kintner, Allen and Brandon, the award-winning essayists are Michael Hitt of Northwood High School; R. Allen Cash, Emily Comegys, Charles Elder, Nancy Moyers and Nicholas Todaro, all of Caddo Magnet High School; and Nikki Mulig, Jimmy Murphy and Kevin Strange, all of Captain Shreve High School.
The Laws of Life Essay Contest invites young people to express in writing their personal ideals and the laws of life they value most. The contest is also designed to help teachers and principals improve the "moral ethos" of their classrooms and schools. According to The Templeton Foundation, "Ultimately, the contest is about concerned adults in a community working together to support, honor and publicly recognize young people who reflect upon and write about their personal beliefs and values."
The local competition, to be expanded in future years, is coordinated by Dr. Katherine Fell, director of scholarships at Centenary. Speakers during the awards reception were Dr. Fell, Dr. Eugene R. Gregory, vice president for development, and Dr. Earl W. Fleck, provost and dean of the college, who spoke on "The Value of a Liberal Arts Education."
