Expert in Religion, Aging and Health
to Speak Oct. 12 at Centenary College
 

SHREVEPORT, LA -- Religion and science will be the topics Thursday, Oct. 12 when Dr. Harold G. Koenig speaks at Centenary College.  Koenig is a Duke Medical School professor and authority on religion and health.

He will speak at 9:30 a.m. in the South Dining Hall of Centenary's Bynum Commons in a  presentation that is open to students, faculty, and the general public.  His topic will be "Religion and Science: the New Frontier."

The presentation is part of a "Spirituality and Wholeness" seminar being presented in cooperation with Noel United Methodist Church, Christus Schumpert Health System,  LSU Health  Science Center, Centenary's Willson Lecture Series.  Sponsors also include The Samaritan Center, Best Western Chateau Suites Hotel and Professional Printing and Publishing, Inc.

Dr. Koenig completed his undergraduate education at Stanford, his medical training at University of California at San Francisco, and his  geriatric medicine, psychiatry, and biostatistics at Duke University Medical Center.  He is board certified in geriatric psychiatry and geriatric medicine.  He is  now on the faculty at Duke University as associate professor in psychiatry and founder of the Center for the Study of  Religion / Spirituality and Health at Duke.  He has published extensively in the fields of mental health, geriatrics and religion, with over 130 peer-reviewed articles, 35 book chapters and 13 books. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine and  Research News in Science and Theology.

His latest books include Handbook of Religion and Mental Health, The  Healing Power of Faith:  Science Explores Medicine's Last Great Frontier, and Religion and Health: A Century of Research Reviewed.

Dr. Koenig will also make two other appearances on Thursday and one on Friday, Oct. 13 in Shreveport:

• 1:30-4:45 p.m. Thursday at Centenary  -- "The Impact of Religious Faith on Mental and Physical Health," a continuing education workshop for professionals in the mental and physical health care fields; Fee $30; Register through the Samaritan Center at 221-6121.                                                                    
• 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Noel United Methodist Church  -- "Spirituality, Religion and Healing,"  a community dinner at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church; $6 reservations required.
