Centenary Again No. 1 "Best Value" Among South's Regional Universities in U.S. News "America's Best Colleges" Survey

SHREVEPORT, LA -- Where will you get the most for your money?  Among Southern colleges and universities, that's at Centenary College, according to U.S. News & World Report, which once again ranks Centenary in the No. 1 spot among the Top 15 in the region.

The magazine released its annual Best Colleges survey today (Friday, Sept. 1) on its web site.  The announcement marked the third time that Centenary has been ranked first or second in the Best Value regional rankings.  Centenary was listed at No. 2 last year (1999-2000) and No. 1 the previous year (1998-99).

U.S. News noted that it measures value by relating a school's quality ranking with the net cost to a student who receives the average level of financial aid.

In addition, for the 11th consecutive year, U.S. News recognized Centenary's commitment to excellence by ranking it in a separate listing of top colleges and universities in the South.  This year, Centenary is ranked No. 12 among institutions identified as the South's "Best Regional Universities."

Centenary is listed among the Top 31 Southern universities, based on 16 measures of excellence, in the magazine's Sept 11, 2000 issue and in the  2001 edition of the U.S. News guidebook,  America's Best Colleges.   Both are available on newsstands Sept. 4.

To  determine rankings, U.S. News looks at colleges' academic reputation, retention rate, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance, and alumni giving.

Centenary President Kenneth L. Schwab said the continued national recognition underscores Centenary's reputation for excellence, an outstanding faculty and staff, and a student-centered environment.  "Once again, we are pleased that a national audience will be reminded that Centenary College of Louisiana continues to be an outstanding educational institution that encourages leadership and an education for a lifetime," he said.

Founded in 1825 and the nation's oldest private college west of the Mississippi River, Centenary is a selective liberal arts college that encourages leadership, citizenship and community service.  The college offers 44 majors in its Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities divisions.

Other Louisiana schools named to the regional list were Loyola University in seventh place and Xavier University of Louisiana in 18th place.  Both are located in New Orleans. In the Best Value ranking, Loyola was listed at No. 12.
