Centenary Concert Series Announces Season SHREVEPORT, LA--The Baltimore Consort, the New Friends Chamber Players, two local pianists and a San Francisco Opera star headline this year's Friends of Music Series at Centenary College. The Concert Series is hosted and sponsored annually by the Hurley School of Music at Centenary. Nov. 5: Pianists Gay Grosz and Bill Bloomquist On Sunday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m., the season opener will feature pianists Gay Grosz and Bill Bloomquist, who are well known to local audiences as accompanists for the Nena Plant Wideman Piano Competition. They will perform solo and duo piano works by Bach, Mozart, Liszt, and Medtner. Bloomquist has performed in many of the nation's major concert halls, including Washington, D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Boston’s Jordan Hall and New York City’s Merkin Concert Hall. He has recorded two CDs with clarinetist Charles Stier. Gay Grosz recently completed her master’s degree at Louisiana State University, where she studied with Constance Knox. She is currently an instructor of accompanying and piano at Centenary. Dec. 10: The Baltimore Consort On Sunday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m., the Friends of Music will present the Baltimore Consort, which specializes in "early music," in one of their special Christmas concerts. The group of six musicians was founded in 1980 to perform the music of Shakespeare’s time, and has since explored English, Scottish, and French popular music of the 16th to 18th centuries, as well as German Christmas tunes and Italian music of the Renaissance. They record on the Dorian label. Feb. 18: New Friends Chamber Players Instrumental music from the New Friends Chamber Players will be featured in the third concert on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. Led by cellist Ruth Drummond and French hornist Tom Hundemer, the New Friends Chamber Players are regional artists from the Shreveport area. The group has been a regular feature of the Friends of Music season for several years, performing a varied palette of chamber music.
March 25: San Francisco Opera Star and Centenary alumna Twyla Robinson The Friends of Music season will close on Sunday, March 25 with a 3 p.m. vocal recital by San Francisco Opera star Twyla Robinson. A Louisiana native who graduated from Centenary College before going on to graduate study at Indiana University, Robinson has sung leading roles with the Merola Opera Program, Western Opera Theater, San Francisco Opera Center, all under the aegis of the San Francisco Opera. She has also performed in the prestigious Schwabacher Debut Recital Series. Currently an Adler Fellow with the San Francisco Opera, she will debut there this fall with the role of the First Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. She will also be covering the role of the Marshallin for Renee Fleming in Der Rosenkavalier. Her accompanist for the recital will be Gay Grosz. All concerts will be in the Recital Hall of the Hurley School of Music. Season tickets for the series are $30 for adults and $12 for students. Single concert tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students. Tickets are on sale at the music office of the Hurley School of Music.
