Centenary to Add Men's
and Women's Swimming as Varsity Sport
SHREVEPORT—Centenary President Dr.
Kenneth Schwab has announced that Centenary will add men and women’s swimming
as a varsity sport beginning in the 2002-03 season.
The addition of swimming to the athletic
program will increase the
total number of varsity sports to
18, more than any other school in
North Louisiana (Louisiana Tech
14, Northwestern State 14, and Grambling 16).
Dr. Schwab also announced that Butch
Jordan, veteran Shreveport
Swim Team coach, will coach both
the men and women’s teams. “I am very excited to accept this position at
Centenary and to coach at the Division I level,” said Jordan. “I
am looking forward to recruiting and scheduling this year in preparation
for competition in the 2002-03 season.”
Centenary is the first school in
the area to add swimming as a
varsity sport. “There has been a
void in this area in the past when it comes to swimming, but Centenary
has taken care of that. Now the youth of
Shreveport can watch college swimming
firsthand and know that they can
continue to swim after high school,”
said Jordan.
The addition of swimming to the athletic
lineup at Centenary, combined with major renovations that have already
taken place, shows the commitment the college has made to athletics.
“This is a significant step forward for Centenary athletics and the college,”
said Athletic Director Dr. David Bedard. “Coach Jordan is highly
qualified and we are excited to have him.”
