Professor Bruce Allen to Speak
about Asian Art at Centenary Convocation March
15 in Brown Chapel
SHREVEPORT, LA -- Bruce
Allen, professor and chairman of the Art Department at Centenary College,
will discuss Asian art and his travels through China and Tibet during a
public lecture at 11:10 a.m. Thursday, March 15 in Centenary's Kilpatrick
Auditorium.
Professor Allen will
show slides and video while giving an overview of his two-month trip last
year. He visited Hong Kong, Xian, Lhafa Tibet, Beijing and Tokyo.
The idea for the trip
came about five years ago when two Chinese artists came to Centenary for
a semester. Upon their departure, they invited Allen to visit them
at their own institution. Allen accepted the invitation during his recent
sabbatical and gave multiple talks at the Art Institute of Xian.
Allen is a 1975 art
graduate and a 1977 mathematics graduate of Centenary. He continued his
education at the University of Wyoming where he earned his M.F.A. in sculpture
and printmaking. Allen returned to Shreveport in 1983 and has been
a professor of art at Centenary for the past 18 years, including 12 years
as chairman of the department.
The convocation, which
ends at noon, is open to the public as a service of the Centenary Convocations
Committee. Kilpatrick Auditorium is located in the Smith Building
at the corner of Kings Highway and Woodlawn Street.
