245 Graduates Earn Degrees during Centenary College of Louisiana Commencement May 4
 
                   
SHREVEPORT, LA -- A total of 245 students were graduated Saturday, May 4, 2002 during Centenary College of Louisiana's annual commencement ceremonies in the Gold Dome. Dr. Martin E. Marty, nationally known theologian and professor emeritus of the University of Chicago Divinity School, delivered the commencement address. 

Graduates included 199 earning bachelor's degrees and 43 receiving master's degrees. Honorary doctorates were awarded to Dr. Marty, honorary Doctor of Divinity, and to Virginia Kilpatrick Shehee, honorary Doctor of Laws; and Rose Van Thyn, honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.  Mrs. Shehee, a well-known Louisiana business and civic leader, is a 1943 Centenary graduate and a longtime member of the Centenary Board of Trustees.  Mrs. Van Thyn is a Holocaust survivor who came to Shreveport following World War II.   She is a frequent lecturer at Centenary and throughout the area.

The college also recognized and awarded "emeritus" status to its longest-serving faculty member, music professor Ron Dean, a faculty member since 1960.

Nineteen students were graduated summa cum laude, having earned grade-point averages of 3.9 or higher. Thirty-six earned the magna cum laude designation, with 3.7 to 3.89 GPAs, and 33 achieved cum laude status, having, 3.5 to 3.69 GPAs.
