Centenary College's Chemistry Club 1 of 31 in Nation Judged "Outstanding" by American Chemical Society

Chemistry Club at Hollywood School

Members of Centenary's award-winning Chemistry Club work with students on hands-on projects at Caddo Middle Career and Technology School.

SHREVEPORT, LA -- For the second year, the Centenary College Chemistry Club has been named "outstanding" by the American Chemical Society. "Outstanding" is the highest category of award, given this year to only 31 of the 900 clubs nationwide.

The award plaque will be presented at the national ACS meeting in New Orleans in March 2003.

Officers during the award period were Leif Sherry, Krissy Kruse, Aimee Robinson, and Cody McDonald.  Dr. Tom Ticich, chairman of the Department of Chemistry, served as the adviser.

This is the sixth consecutive award that the Centenary club has received from the ACS and the second in the outstanding category.  The award stems from the number and variety of activities the club has sponsored.  The major activity was the service project to Caddo Middle Career and Technology School where Centenary students worked with two sixth-grade classes throughout the year.  The club also sponsored social events, attended seminars at local ACS section meetings, contributed to the "Trick or Terror" campuswide community-service event at Centenary, and celebrated National Chemistry Week on campus and in the community with a full schedule of activities.

The club also played a major role in a ChemLuminary Award received by the Northwest Louisiana ACS section.  The National Chemistry Week Task Force presented awards to 13 local sections for specific events at the national ACS meeting in Boston in August.  Northwest Louisiana won in the category of greatest membership involvement for a program of hands-on activities and magic shows it sponsored at Sci-Port Discovery Center last year.  Half of the volunteers were Centenary Chemistry Club members, who set up the activities for 200 local school children.  This is the first ChemLuminary Award received by the local section.
