Centenary College Announces Sept. 11 Commemorative Activities

SHREVEPORT, LA -- An early morning meditative service, an evening candlelight procession and a program of remembrance are among activities planned at Centenary College for the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.  

The day will begin with a brief service of reflection to be held in Crumley Gardens at 7:30 a.m.  Sixteen minutes later, the carillon chimes atop Magale Library will chime for 10 seconds in memory of the time the first hijacked plane struck the World Trade Center.  The bells will also toll for 10 seconds each at 8:03 a.m., the time the second plane struck; at 8:43 a.m., the time the Pentagon was attacked; at 8:59 a.m., when the South Tower of the Trade Center collapsed; at 9:10 a.m., the time of the Pennsylvania plane crash; and at 9:28 a.m., when the North Tower collapsed. 

Immediately following the 9:28 a.m. chimes, the campus will observe a minute of silence in memory of the victims.  The carillons will be heard twice more during the day: from noon to 1 p.m., when patriotic and spiritual music will be played, and at 9:11 p.m., when the bells will toll for one minute. 

For the program of remembrance, participants are being asked to pick up candles at 9 p.m. on the porch of Brown Chapel and to join a candlelight procession to the Hargrove Band Shell.  The program will include the playing of the Alan Jackson song "Where Were You?" as well as a multimedia presentation with voices, music and images from Sept. 11.
 The program will conclude at 9:40 p.m. with the Centenary Choir singing "May the Lord Bless You and Keep You."
