Over 35,000 Books Available at 17th Annual Centenary Book Bazaar Sept. 12-13 in Gold Dome

SHREVEPORT, LA -- The 17th annual Centenary Book Bazaar -- with thousands of used books, records, CDs, and tapes -- will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12 and 13, in the Centenary College Gold Dome. Sale hours on Friday are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s Book Bazaar is dedicated to the late Bill Garrett of Shreveport, who in previous years worked tirelessly to assist in coordinating and organizing the annual sale. Upon his death, he donated his entire library of opera, ballet and symphony videos and books to the bazaar. The event will also include Centenary’s special recognition of the contributions of the late Carolyn Clay Flournoy, who served as president of the Centenary Muses and Book Bazaar organizer and volunteer for many years.

Offerings also include bestsellers, encyclopedias, dictionaries, literary classics, novels, textbooks, first editions, rare books, and special interest categories. Almost 4,000 children’s books and over 1,500 cookbooks are also included. Many of the books are hardbacks and all are in good condition.

A sealed bid auction will feature rare and unusual items such as a three-volume set of The Works by Edgar Allen Poe, dated 1905; a limited edition sterling silver presidential inauguration plate from 1973 depicting Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew, and Ambush: The Real Story of Bonnie and Clyde by Ted Hinton. Of particular interest is a first edition folio book by James Joyce titled The Mime of Mick Nick and the Maggies, a Fragment From a Work in Progress. A very rare book, it is one of only 1,000 copies printed in 1934. While books will be sold on the main floor of the Gold Dome, over 3,000 vinyl records, including many Hollywood, Broadway and television soundtracks, will be sold by the Centenary music sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota, on the upper level.

The annual sale is sponsored by the Centenary Muses. Proceeds are used to fund projects and programs for Centenary College students. Last year’s projects included providing funds for domestic and international student travel programs, equipment and materials for academic departments and student organizations, Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, computers for the Yoncopin (yearbook) and Honor Court, scholarships, and furniture for residence halls.
