American Institute of Physics Recognizes Centenary College Chapter of Society of Physics Students as Outstanding, Among Top 10 Percent in Nation

SHREVEPORT, LA— The American Institute of Physics has recognized Centenary College's chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) as an Outstanding SPS Chapter for the 2002-03 school year.

Fewer than 10 percent of the 760 chapters nationwide received the honor. Centenary's chapter has been recognized, this year and in the past, for its breadth of activities, including its popular annual Egg Drop Contest and Physics and Chemistry Circus.

Outstanding chapters, selected by zone councilors, are determined by the chapter's involvement in local, zone and national SPS meetings and other professional meetings, participation in SPS programs and outreach efforts to grades K-12 or the general public, participation in community service, contributions to student recruitment and retention, participation in social events, and interactions with the department's alumni.

Current student officers of Centenary's SPS are Patrick Culver of Jefferson, Texas, president; Davon Ferrera of Hammond, La., vice president; Laurie Stevison of Kenner, La., secretary; and Michael Silvernail of Houston, Texas, treasurer. Dr. Jerry Lisantti is the group's faculty adviser and Dr. Jeff Trahan is chair of the Department of Physics.
