Two Juilliard Students Win Wideman Piano Competition at Centenary College

SHREVEPORT, LA — Two students from The Juilliard School tied for the gold medal at the Shreveport Symphony Guild's 2003 Wideman Piano Competition finals Dec. 7 at Centenary College of Louisiana.

Minju Choi and Esther Jung-A Park each won $2,500 through the Martha Jones Rice Award, the Raymond and Goldie Morris Award, the Mae Benson Trust and the B'nai Zion Congregation.

Other winners were:

  • Diego Rodriguez, Southern Methodist University, Bronze Medal ($1,000 Dr. Jack E. and Carroll Bright Carlisle Award)
  • Anastasia Markina, University of North Texas, Honorable Mention ($750 Lester Senter Wilson/Marcille Young Award)
  • Chung-hsi Hsieh, Rutgers University; Hoi-Young Jang, Rutgers University; and Beatriz Pimentel, University of Houston ($500 each from the Dr. & Mrs. F. Thomas Siskron III Award)

This year's judges were:

  • Mark Carrington, music director of The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
  • Concert pianists Alessio Bax, Lucille Chung and Alon Goldstein
  • Francisco Orozco, associate conductor of the Orquestra Filharmonica de Jalisco of Guadalajara, Mexico
  • John Shenaut, conductor emeritus of the Shreveport Symphony.
