SHREVEPORT, LA -- The Centenary College Muses will sponsor a four-part program and host a luncheon for their 2003 Spring Lecture Series, which will explore “Kate Chopin: A Woman Ahead of Her Time.”

Amanda Chenault, curator-director of the Bayou Folk Museum in Cloutierville, will speak on “The Life of Kate Chopin” at the kickoff luncheon. It will be held at noon Monday, March 3 in the South Dining Hall. and will cost $10. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 318-869-5106. The program is a part of Celebration of Women Week.

Author Kate Chopin (1850-1904) spent 13 years of her married life in New Orleans and Cloutierville, and often wrote about life in New Orleans, Natchitoches Parish and Grand Isle. Her work featured perspectives of women that were not thought to be appropriate during the prim Victorian era. The Awakening, often called Chopin's most famous work, was considered quite scandalous for its time.

Sessions of the Spring Lecture Series will be held March 18 and 25 and April 2 and 8 in Jackson Hall 304. The hour-long lectures by Centenary English professors will be offered at 11:15 a.m. and repeated at 5:15 p.m. Participants can attend at either time. Cost for the series is $40. Books for the lecture series will be available for purchase at the luncheon.

Advance registration is available for one or both events. For further information, call Linda Trichel at 318-869-5106.
