FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (4/04) Nine Earn Honors at Centenary College Student Research ForumSHREVEPORT, LA -- Nine students received first- or second-place awards in four divisions during the 13th annual Student Research Forum at Centenary College of Louisiana on April 16. All students received certificates and cash awards. Divisional winners for oral/research project or presentation are: Humanities: Second place — Kristin Cochran, English major from Texarkana, Texas, for "The Declaration of Sentiments and Its Influence on the Development of Feminism in the 19th-Century" with research adviser Dr. Kim VanHoosier-Carey. Natural Sciences: Second place — Addie Dickson, biology major from Shreveport, La., for "Cell Cycle Synchronization in Arabidopsis thaliana" with research adviser Dr. John Larkin, and Erin Watson, biology major from Alexandria, La., for "A Comparative Analysis of T-Lymphocytes in Healthy and Inflamed Mice" with research advisers Dr. Beth Leuck and Dr. David Stafford. Social Sciences: Second place — Adam Dufour, accounting major from Mansfield, La., for "Too Many Tables: The Impact of Casino Gambling & Tourism on the Restaurant Industry of Shreveport/Bossier City, Louisiana" with research advisers Dr. Barbara Davis and Dr. Helen Sikes. Research Posters: Second place — C. Sean Hauser, biology major from Shreveport, La., for "Effects of Environmental Flow Rate on the Upper Critical Temperature of the Mosquitofish Gambusia affinis" with research adviser Dr. Beth Leuck. The annual Student Research Forum allows students to present the results of their independent research before an audience of faculty and peers. Faculty judges evaluate presentations based on style, performance, communication/organization, content, objectives, difficulty/effort, originality/creativity, results and significance. A total of 38 research papers and posters were presented during this year's forum. Judges this year were Dr. David Bieler, geology; Dr. Scott Chirhart, biology; Dr. Maureen Murov, Spanish; Dr. Ross Smith, music; and Dr. R. Matthew Weeks, psychology.
