Centenary's Kylie Garrett Receives Jim Leslie Memorial Scholarship

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary student Kylie Garrett of Spring, Texas, is one of two students whose excellent academic records in communications-related curricula have earned them Jim Leslie Memorial Scholarships from the Shreveport-Bossier Advertising Federation.

Ms. Garrett is a senior majoring in communication at Centenary. A straight-A student, she is a writer and editor for the student newspaper, The Conglomerate, and is a member of the women's varsity soccer team. SBAF also awarded a Leslie scholarship to Shay Kuhn of Winnfield, La., a graphic arts student at Northwestern State University.

Both are the first students from their schools to be named Leslie Scholars since the award began in 1978. The $1,100 scholarships are offered to assist outstanding students with tuition and book expenses.

Centenary professor Greg VanHoosier-Carey stated in his recommendation of Ms. Garrett: "Kylie gives every task her all. She is a driven student who one can depend on; she always gets the job done in a professional manner no matter what it takes."

The scholarship memorializes the late Jim Leslie, who began his career as a young reporter with The Shreveport Times and later worked in the public information department at the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce before opening his own advertising agency.

Winners are selected by the Jim Leslie Scholarship Board of Directors, which operates independently from the Shreveport-Bossier Advertising Federation's Board of Directors. The scholarship is structured to benefit students attending a North Louisiana four-year college or university majoring in a communications-related field such as journalism, radio and television, graphic design, advertising, communications, photography, public relations and marketing.

Students competing for the scholarship must have a 2.5 or better overall GPA and a 3.0 or higher in their major, must have earned at least 72 hours or six semesters toward their major, and must not be paying out-of-state tuition.

Letters of recommendation from at least one faculty member in the student's major and from the leader of a church or public service related organization are also required.
