ACADEMIC YEAR 2004-05 OPENS WITH EXCITEMENT

The excitement of the new academic year is in the air this week as students and faculty head to the campus in the coming days. New students begin moving in Wednesday, Aug. 25, and the remainder move back on Sunday, in anticipation of the first day of classes on Monday, Aug. 30.

Some talking points about this year’s opening:

  • More than 330 students are new to Centenary this fall, including first-year students, transfers, readmits, non-degree seeking students and those pursuing second degrees. Of the total, there are 287 new first-year students, compared to 199 a year ago.

  • Of the first-year students, the middle 50 percent scored between 23 and 28 on the ACT and 1060 and 1240 on the SAT.

  • Some students will experience some up-close and personal living quarters — at least temporarily — at the beginning of the current semester. Student Life/Residence Life has scrambled to find on-campus housing for the large incoming class, starting with 616 spaces and 669 requests for space. Guest rooms, the President’s Suite, the Bishop’s Suite and some 20 other areas have been converted to student rooms and only a few students will be housed in “triples” initially.

  • The Wright Mathematics Building, formerly the Baptist Center, opens this fall and will be dedicated later during the semester. Also new: the garden, benches and walk outside Bynum Commons, new counters in the North Dining Hall and new lighting and décor in the hall leading to it and lots of new paint, lighting, furniture, showers, patios, benches and tree work. Less visible but also very important — the new roof on Marjorie Lyons Playhouse and the satellite dish for receiving programming for KSCL, located on the roof of the Moore Student Union Building. And there is the changeover to Time-Warner Cable and its accompanying new channels in the residence halls.

  • President’s Convocation on Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. in Brown Chapel will launch some new traditions. While first-year students will march in the processional, seniors will follow the Maroon Jackets and line the Chapel walkway to cheer on the procession. Prior to the event — starting at 10:15 a.m. — there will be a reception honoring this year's seniors. It will be held on the outdoor patio between Mickle Hall and Magale Library. Speakers at convocation: President Ken Schwab, Provost Darrel Colson and Alumna Rayne Martin '96 of the Chicago Housing Authority.

  • Meadows Opens England-Hogarth Exhibition
    “Master of Satire: The World of 18th Century England Through the Eyes of William Hogarth” opened Aug. 21 at the Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College. See details at

  • Market Research Under Way
    The College has contracted with a higher education consultant to conduct market research in a number of areas during the fall semester in anticipation of a new communications/marketing/positioning plan. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the college will be participating in interviews in early September. By late September, on-line surveys will be going out to all current students, followed by in-depth telephone interviews with a number of external audiences and prospective students and donors. The Office of Public Relations is coordinating the project.

  • Congratulations to Dr. David Havird, Provost's Office, and Peggy Cooper, Office of Public Relations, upon receiving an Award of Excellence from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). CASE recognized Centenary's Kudos publication, which chronicles faculty achievements, in the category of visual design—brochures, flyers and booklets, during the annual awards competition in Houston.

Wedding Bells
Best wishes to Chris Derrick of ITS and Kim Hobbs of the Development Office, who were married Aug. 10 in Jamaica.

Bon Voyage to Grace Bareikis
A Bon Voyage party for Grace Bareikis will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, in the lobby of Hamilton Hall. Come wish her well as she retires from her position as director of intercultural affairs.

In Memoriam
The entire campus community mourned the loss of longtime Centenary employee Linda Muse, who died July 4, six days after experiencing an aneurysm. Services were held July 7 in Brown Chapel. Linda, 46, earned a music degree from Centenary in 1989 and was an administrative computing specialist. The College has established the Linda Muse Memorial Scholarship in Music in her memory. President Schwab read a letter from her family and led a moment of silence during the Administrative Staff meeting on Aug. 16.
