Feb. 9 concert to feature winners of this year’s Concerto/Aria Competition and the World Premiere of Southern Lullaby for Strings by Centenary Professor Todd Gabriel

SHREVEPORT, LA --The Hurley Orchestra at Centenary College, under the direction of Dr. Todd Gabriel, will perform An 8 p.m. Feb. 9 concert featuring this year’s winners of the Hurley School of Music Concerto-Aria Competition. The concert, free and open to the public, will be held in the Anderson Auditorium in the Hurley Music Building at Centenary.

Two vocalists, Sarah Kate Ross, soprano, and Sterling Allen, baritone, will perform arias from operas by Bernstein and Mozart. Violinist Robert Schaumburg will solo in Beethoven’s Romance in F, and Laura Daigle, on oboe, will be the soloist in two movements from a 17th century Oboe Concerto by Marcello.

Also on the program are two beautiful string works by American composers Hovhaness and Gabriel. The first piece, Prayer of Saint Gregory, features trumpeter Kenneth Portis, and the second, Southern Lullaby by Centenary composition professor Dr. Todd Gabriel, is a world premiere. Dr. Gabriel studied composition at Juilliard with David Diamond and Lester Trimble, at the University of Arizona with Daniel Asia, and at Aspen with George Tsontakis. This work was recently written for the Hurley Orchestra.

The concert will conclude with the orchestra performing the famous Overture to the Barber of Seville by Rossini.
