Centenary Film Society Announces Spring 2004 Series

SHREVEPORT, LA — On Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 3 and 5 at 7 p.m. at Centenary College, the Centenary Film Society will begin its 20th year of bringing international, independent and quality Hollywood movies to the Shreveport-Bossier area. All films begin at 7 p.m. in Carlile Auditorium of the Mickle Hall of Science. No admission fee is charged.

The series opens with Douglas McGrath’s 2002 British film, Nicholas Nickleby. Based on one of Charles Dickens’s best-loved novels, Nicholas Nickleby is the story of a young man in 19th century London who must try to save his family after his father dies and the family finds out that they are left penniless. This historical comic-drama starts Christopher Plummer, Jim Broadbent and Juliet Stevenson. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times calls the film “jolly, exciting, brimming with life, and wonderfully well-acted.”

Also on tap during the first week of the spring series: Nicole Holofcener’s dramatic-comedy, Lovely and Amazing. Playing on Friday and Saturday nights, Feb. 6 and 7, also in Carlile Auditorium at 7 p.m., Lovely and Amazing centers around the family trials and tribulations of a mother (Brenda Blethyn) and her three daughters.

Other films on this season’s schedule include: Swimming Pool (Feb. 10 & 12); Millennium Actress (Feb. 13 & 14); Lost in Translation (Feb. 17 & 19); The Son’s Room (March 2 & 4); Sweet Sixteen (March 5 & 6); City of God (March 9 & 11); 24 Hour Party People (March 12 & 13); Butterfly (March 16 & 18); Blue Car (March 19 & 20); Elling Mar. 23 & 25; Pieces of April (March 26 & 27); Heaven (March 30 & April 1); Better Luck Tomorrow (April 2 & 3); Man on the Train (April 13 & 15); Northfork April 17, and Together (April 20 & 22).
