Grammy-winning Tenor and Centenary Alumnus Karl Dent to Perform Jan. 25 in Friends of Music Concert Series

Karl Dent

SHREVEPORT, LA — On Sunday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m., Centenary College’s Friends of Music Concert Series will present tenor and alumnus Karl Dent in a vocal recital. The program contains songs by Purcell, Righini, Debussy and Barber.

It also features “Children’s Letters to God” by James Cram and Ralph Vaughan Williams “Along the Field” for voice and violin. Violinist John Gilbert, on the faculty of Texas Tech University, will accompany Dent on the Vaughan Williams songs. Pianist Gay Grosz, on the faculty of Centenary’s Hurley School of Music, will accompany the concert.

Noted for interpretations in oratorio, tenor Karl Dent performs extensively in concert and recital. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1993 as soloist in Berlioz’s Requiem, and returned there in 1994 to sing J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. He has appeared with numerous orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, and the symphony orchestras of San Francisco, Cleveland, Atlanta, Montreal, Baltimore, Houston and Dallas, and the National Symphony of Washington, D.C. He has appeared as soloist with major music festivals including the Cincinnati May, Bach Aria, Round Top Early Music, New Texas Festival, and more recently at the Tanglewood performing Mozart’s Requiem.

Dent maintained a long performing collaboration with the late Robert Shaw over a 10-year period, performing as tenor soloist in most of the standard oratorio literature. From this collaboration also came a number of recordings on the TELARC label, seven appearances at Carnegie Hall, and numerous engagements with symphony orchestras in most of the American major metropolitan centers.

Dent’s numerous recordings on the TELARC label include the Grammy-winning Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, named Best Choral Recording for 1997. In addition, the Rachmaninoff Vespers, recorded in 1989, also won a Grammy. His recording with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony of Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass received a Grammy nomination in 1990 for Best Choral Recording. Other solo recording credits include Schubert’s Songs for Male Chorus, Brahms's Liebeslieder Wälzer, and Great Opera Choruses.

A native of Houston, Dent is in his 10th year as artist/associate professor of music at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

The concert will take place in Anderson Auditorium in the Hurley Music Building. Ticket prices for the concert are $10 for adults and $5for students. Patrons may order tickets by calling the Hurley School of Music at 318-869-5235, or by purchasing them at the door to the concert.
