Summer Band Concerts — Free and Public — Set for June 15, 22, 29 in Centenary's Hargrove Band Shell

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Centenary College Summer Band popular outdoor concerts will be offered three times during the summer of 2004. The concerts will be held at 8 p.m. June 15, 22 and 29 in the Hargrove Band Shell on the Centenary campus. The concerts will be held outdoors rain or shine and will be cancelled or shortened only if there are unsafe conditions, such as lightning or high winds.

Dr. Thomas Stone, director of instrumental music at Centenary, will conduct the ensemble comprised of Shreveport Symphony musicians, Centenary faculty, local music teachers, retired teachers, military musicians and Centenary students. Sponsors are Smith and Co., Certified Public Accountants; AEP Southwestern Electric Power Co.; the students of the late B.P. Causey Sr.: and the American Federation of Musicians Local 116.

The concerts are free and open to the public, with concertgoers invited to bring seat cushions, lawn chairs and their own picnics.

For the June 15 concert, which is sponsored by Smith and Co. CPAs and hosted by Centenary President Kenneth Schwab, the schedule for the first half includes Centennial Fanfare, Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna, Sea Songs, Oliver!, British Eight and Commando March.

During the second half of the June 15 concert, the program includes Suite in D, March Grandioso, Pacem, First Suite in F, Sea Chantey, Song of the Bells Country Dance, Rumba Rumba and The Thunderer.

The June 22 concert, hosted by Centenary trustee and alumna Virginia Shehee, will be played in memory of B.P. Causey, who initiated the Summer Band in 1957 and directed its concerts for 30 years. The concert is sponsored by the students of Mr. Causey, who died Aug. 14, 2003 at age 86.

The program will include, in the first half, The Liberty Bell, Procession of the Nobles (Richard Jennings, Conductor), West Side Story Highlights (Robert Smith, Conductor), Swing Low, Sweet Chariot (Douglas Peterson, Trombone), Washington Grays and Amparita Roca.

Following intermission, the June 22 concert program will include Roman Carnival, Variations on a Korean Folksong, Three Jacks (Bill Causey Jr., Mike Scarlato, Robert Smith, Trumpets), Phantom of the Opera, Barnum and Bailey's Favorite, On The Mall and Stars and Stripes Forever.

The June 29 concert is sponsored by AEP Southwestern Electric Power and hosted by Liz Swaine of the Shreveport Mayor's Office. The first-half program will include The Star Spangled Banner, When Jesus Wept, Midway March, Chorale and Shaker Dance, and 1st South Dakota Infantry.

For the second half, the program is Concertino for Oboe (Theresa Zale Bridges, Oboe), Buckaroo Holiday, Shenandoah, Belle of the Ball and The Fairest of the Fair.
