Centenary Professor Doug Rust's Edition of Benny Goodman Band Music Selected for Printing

SHREVEPORT, LA — Through a collaboration with the Yale Music Library, New York Performing Arts Library, the Goodman Estate and Hal Leonard (the world's largest publisher of band music), a Centenary College professor's work will find its way into print this year.

Dr. Douglas Rust's edition of Benny Goodman Band music brings classic versions of important tunes (for instance, "Let's Dance") into publication for the first time--complete with original instrumentation, transcribed solos and parts that reliably match the authentic recording.

Rust, an assistant professor of music, has been a member of the Centenary faculty since 2002. He holds a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University and a B.M. in jazz piano from University of North Texas. He is a native of Toledo, Ohio.

He has published on 20th Century music topics in Music Theory Spectrum, Musical Quarterly, and Current Musicology. He also has prepared editions for Kalmus and Hal Leonard publishers. A Mellon Fellow at Yale, he served as assistant editor of the Journal of Music Theory before accepting music theory teaching positions at Texas A&M and at Southwestern University.

His newest article, "Two Questions of Perception in Lutoslawski's Second Symphony" will be published in the next issue of Perspectives of New Music, considered the foremost English-language academic journal for 20th-Century music.

He also recently read his paper,"Textural Intricacy and the Auditory Scene: A New Application of Bregman's Granular Analysis," at the Music Theory Midwest conference in Kansas City, Mo. The paper applies the cognitive research of psychologist Albert Bregman to music analysis of the 1960s avant garde.
