Centenary Professors English and Bukoff to Perform at National Convention of National Association of Teachers of Singing

SHREVEPORT, LA — Two music professors at Centenary College will perform at the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Drs. Horace English and Ronald Bukoff of the music faculty of the Hurley School of Music will perform at the organization's 48th national convention to be held in New Orleans July 8–12.

Dr. English, bass-baritone, and Dr. Bukoff, bassoon, will perform selections from Bukoff’s three sets of pieces for bass-baritone and bassoon: English Sea Shanties; Mountain Men; and The Good, the Bad, and the Dogie: Cowboy Songs. The concert will be held on July 9 at a special session titled “Performances of Vocal Chamber Music.” The performance will include a brief lecture demonstration and performance of selected songs from the duos.

As part of the lengthy and highly competitive application process, Drs. English and Bukoff had to apply and record the chosen selections over a year in advance of the actual convention. English Sea Shanties; Mountain Men; and The Good, the Bad, and the Dogie: Cowboy Songs have been successfully performed and enthusiastically received in recital by Bukoff and English at Centenary. The literature for bassoon and voice is extremely limited, almost non-existent, and these compositions are the first of their kind for this specific pairing.

	Dr. Horace English

Dr. English is a versatile performer who counts both opera and music theater roles among his credits, as well as frequent appearances on the concert stage. Some of his performances include productions of The Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte, Faust, Susanna, Lucretia Borgia, and Il Trovatore. His music theater appearances include the title roles in Man of La Mancha and Sweeney Todd. Dr. English has his D.M.A. from Florida State University, and a Master of Church Music from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Dr. Ronald Bukoff

Dr. Bukoff is professionally active as a music librarian, musicologist, educator and bassoonist. He has published papers on music, music theater, double reeds, library and interdisciplinary studies, and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences. He has played the bassoon professionally with orchestras in California, New York, Pennsylvania and Louisiana, Texas. Dr. Bukoff has a Ph.D. in musicology from Cornell University and a M.L.S. with a specialty in music librarianship from Indiana University, Bloomington.
