Centenary's Frost School of Business Launches Center for Family-Owned Business with Workshop by Harvard Faculty Chair of Families in Business

"Only 30 percent of family businesses survive through the second generation ... Centenary's Center for Family-Owned Business will help family businesses in the region to understand, address and resolve issues unique to them. We will give them the tools to succeed."
—Dr. Christopher Martin, Dean, Frost School of Business

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College's Frost School of Business will kick off its new Center for Family-Owned Business May 20 and 21 with a workshop featuring John A. Davis of the Harvard Business School.

Davis, the faculty chair of Families in Business, has been recognized as a global leader in family business education, research and consulting. He is the coauthor of Generation to Generation: Life Cycles of the Family Business, and is completing a book that identifies the practices of family businesses that have prospered for generations.

The Frost School of Business has offered a limited number of memberships in the Center to family-owned businesses in the region so that participants will be able to talk freely, think out loud, ask questions and benefit from informal networking with other family businesses, said Centenary President Kenneth L. Schwab.

Dr. Christopher Martin, dean of the Frost School of Business, said that the Center will offer two major speakers, library resources and affinity groups on family business issues. Education and training programs available through the Center will focus on strategic planning, growth strategies, succession planning, and the legal, management and financial issues that are unique to the family-owned enterprise.

Davis will speak on "Challenges and Best Practices of Family-Owned Businesses" during an evening meeting Thursday, May 20, at the Shreveport Club. On Friday, May 21, he will keynote a seminar and case discussion beginning at 8:30 a.m. He will also speak on "Succession Planning and Developing the Next Generation of Family Leadership" from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
