Hurley Orchestra Concert, Directed by Dr. Todd Gabriel, Set for Oct. 11

SHREVEPORT, LA —The Hurley Orchestra at Centenary College, under the direction of Dr. Todd Gabriel, will present a concert at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, in the Anderson Auditorium of the Hurley Music Building.

The concert will feature soprano Gale Odom performing Beethoven’s Scene and Aria, Ah Perfido, op. 65. The work is associated with the composer’s sojourn to Prague in 1796, which connects it with another piece on the program, Antonin Dvorak’s Czech Suite, op. 39, from 1879. Three of the movements from the Suite are versions of typical Czech folk dances (Polka, Sousedska and Furiant), while the other two (Romance and Pastorale) are specifically Czech in expression.

Another Beethoven composition opens the concert, the overture to Ruins of Athens, op 113. The strings of the Hurley Orchestra will be featured in an early symphony by another Viennese composer, Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf , with his virtuosic three movement Symphony in C.

Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.
