SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2004 NEWS & EVENTS

• Choir to Perform at the White House for the sixth time. Congratulations to Will Andress and the Centenary College Choir for once again receiving this prestigious invitation. Twenty-two members of the Choir will travel to Washington, D.C., on Dec. 17 and will perform at the President's Reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 18. They will be treated to a private tour afterwards. See them before they head to Washington at the annual Rhapsody in View concerts Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13 and 14 at the Shreveport Civic Theater.
  
  
• Lights, Lights and More Lights at the Meadows. Meadows Museum has planned a gala event in connection with the opening of its Let There Be Light: The History of Lighting Implements from Ancient Times to the 20th Century from the New Orleans Museum of Art. The exhibit opens with a special membership gala Nov. 13 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the downstairs gallery of the Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College. • College Houses Hurricane Ivan Evacuees. Haynes Gymnasium in the Fitness Center became the temporary home for about 35 students, staff and faculty from our sister institution, Dillard University in New Orleans. • Candidates for U.S. Senate Come to Campus. Monday night Oct. 11 meant more than football, as the League of Women Voters and KTBS-TV presented a live forum with the four major candidates for the U.S. Senate. After the forum, three of the four candidates came to Centenary for a reception with League members, supporters, faculty and students in Kilpatrick Auditorium. • Book Bazaar Earns Largest Amount Ever. Congratulations to the Centenary Muses and all the volunteers who made this year's Centenary Book Bazaar the best ever. The event raised over $38,000 for projects that benefit Centenary students.
  
  
• The Wright Mathematics Building opened at the beginning of the semester. The campus community and friends of the college toured the new facility during an Open House and reception held on Oct. 14, following the meeting of the Board of Trustees. The building was made possible by a bequest from Mrs. Irene Kuhn Wright, Class of 1938, who credited Mathematics Professor Gerard Banks with changing her life. NEWS, NEWS AND MORE CENTENARY NEWS of recent note

• In the News... Centenary events, faculty and students have been featured in news coverage this fall. News articles covered the Centenary Forerunners America's Issues of the Heart programs dealing with same-sex marriage and with abortion, as well as Centenary students' views on voting. Additionally, several other events have been featured in other parts of the newspaper, including the Bubble Rap exhibit that was displayed in Magale Library. ForumNews Weekly did great stories advancing the Centenary Book Bazaar and Meadows Museum's "Let There Be Light!" exhbit and gala. Louisiana Now! ran a photo and article about the Dillard evacuees and Centenary. And the Full Impact Network Sports web site spotlighted the Centenary Softball Team and Coach Mark Montgomery on its main page Oct. 13. The Times also reported on Bob Buseick's pending retirement at the end of this year in an article Oct. 27.

• Students Present Walk-a-Thon and Lick-N-Stick to raise funds for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Yet another successful student event, see the photos at http://www.centenary.edu/news/2004/October/0001.html. Connie Brennan of the Office of Student Life reports that $4,525.01 has been raised as of Oct. 26, with the effort still going strong. Thanks to all who have supported this worthy "Up 'til Dawn" event.
  
  
• Shenandoah Shakespeare Express Performs. This amazing troupe of young actors visits the Centenary campus for a week every year. See scenes from one of the plays at

• Rain Doesn't Dampen Spirits at October "Experience Centenary" Open House held Oct. 9. See photos at http://www.centenary.edu/news/2004/October/0015.html. The second "Experience Centenary" event will be held Nov. 13.
  
  
• Market Research Continues, Survey is Under Way. The College has contracted with a higher education consultant to conduct market research in a number of areas during the fall semester in anticipation of a new communications/marketing/positioning plan. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the college participated in interviews in early September. An on-line survey went out to students on Oct. 5. These will be followed by telephone interviews with some students and, later, with external audiences.

• Music, music, music! Hurley Orchestra Performs and Opera Workshop Gets to Work. The Hurley Orchestra, directed by Dr. Todd Gabriel, performed on Oct. 11. • Alumni Activities Abound. Join in the fun as Centenary alumni sponsor special events in the coming months — all the way from Shreveport to Washington, D.C. and at points east and west. Holiday events are planned in Shreveport, Dallas, Houston and D.C. Already a number of activities have been held this year, thanks to the newly constituted National Alumni Board and some new and/or revived alumni chapters. • Worship service (Catholic): Fr. Joseph Ampatt of St. John Berchman's Parish holds mass in Centenary's Brown Chapel every Thursday at 11:10 a.m. A time for confession is provided before the service, and communion is served at the conclusion of each service. • Campus Crusade for Christ (every Thursday): Everyone is invited to join in music, prayer and interactive Bible study in the Rotary Hall basement conference room at 7 p.m. Open to the public. • Congratuations to Dr. Scott Vetter, Woolf Professor of Geology, who is the 2004 recipient of the Louisiana Science Teachers Association's Craig Award. The award, which memorializes the late Dr. William W. Craig of the University of New Orleans, recognizes university faculty members who, like Dr. Craig, have reached out to K-12 educators and made a difference in their careers. • Piano Recitals Times Two. New Piano Professor Leslie Downs performed in September and Piano Professor Ross Smith will perform in recital Nov. 19. • Stone Rocks. Centenary e-Extra! has learned some interesting news about the activities of Dr. Thomas Stone, associate professor of music. First, he spent a day this past summer at the Library of Congress examining the composer's ink score to Suite in D by Arthur Bird. E. F. Kalmus will be publishing his new edition of the work, based upon his findings. Second, he recently finished a new composition for the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble. On Oct. 8 he conducted the UK Symphonic Band playing his "Shadows of Eternity," and the UK Wind Ensemble premiered "Motations," conducted by Dr. John Lynch. Dr. Stone also taught master classes about conducting and composition during his visit. And last, but not least, he his working on CD liner notes for the University of North Texas. It is for a new CD of the music of Paul Hindemith to be released in December on the GIA label.
  
  
• Social Workers Honor Feldt. Congratulations to Tina Feldt, director of counseling services, who was honored with the Dorothy Schenthal Leadership Award from the Shreveport Region of the National Association of Social Workers. NASW noted that during the last 20 years, Ms. Feldt has been a leader in developing treatment programs for children and adolescents and has served in social work leadership positions in the mental health and social work education fields.

• Nov. 12 — Centenary alumnus and composer James Eakin III, Class of 1999, will present "Composing Professionally, and Choral Composition Techniques," Hurley Room 209. 2 p.m. (This is a wonderful opportunity to hear from one of today's up-and-coming composers! Also, the Centenary Choir will be performing Eakin's "Twinkle" at their Rhapsody in View concerts. "Twinkle" is the third movement of his acclaimed Stargazing suite for chorus, celesta and strings, which premiered at the 2003 MENC Southern regional convention in Savannah, Ga.) STRICTLY PERSONAL, news for and about Centenary faculty and staff

Stork Club — Drs. Matt and Kelly Weeks, psychology and business professors, respectivley, are the proud parents of a son, Avery Matthew Weeks, who arrived on Friday, Sept. 3, at 11:30 p.m. weighing 7 pounds, 13 ounces and measuring 20 1/4 inches long.

Called to Serve — Rick Phillips of the IT Department, a member of the Naval Reserves, has been called to duty for the second time since the War on Terrorism began. This time he will serve for 19 days of duty aboard the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) in November as it returns to the U.S. The last time he was activated, he spent four and a half months on assignment in Naples, Italy, in support of the war.

Two Alumnae Win Cars — Oprah Winfrey's season-opening show was an exciting one for two Centenary alumnae, who were in the audience when everyone won a car. They are Centenary friends and classmates Kristen Batchelor Walker, Class of 1996, of Raleigh, N.C., and Kristen Klein Hands of Lexington, Ky., who attended Centenary for two years before going on to nursing school.

Share Your Recipes — Will Andress's corn muffin recipe was featured in The (Shreveport) Times on Wednesday, Oct. 13. It's a likely candidate for the Centenary cookbook. Know of good recipes with a Centenary connection? Ms. Lavail's rolls? Gents chili? Just a favorite dish by a professor or an alum? Your own star speciality? Peggy Cooper in the Public Relations Office is compiling such culinary delights and will share them with the Centenary family. Send any contributions, with ingredients properly double-checked and the source clearly indicated, to pcooper@centenary.edu.

Spinning Classes — They're back in the Fitness Center. Mike Thomas, Fitness Center manager, has announced that classes are being held on Mondays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. Call the front desk at Ext. 5060 to reserve your bike. Those bikes not reserved are available on a first-come basis.

Former Staffer Joins UNM — Michael Carroll, who once raised funds for Centenary athletics, has been named vice president for institutional advancement and president of the Univerity of New Mexico Foundation. He left his position at Rutgers, where he had been vice president for development and alumni relations and president of the Rutgers University Foundation for seven years. He begins work at UNM on Nov. 1.

Monica Fay Robertson, daughter of longtime Centenary food service employee Mrs. Lavail Stewart.

From Chaplain Betsy Eaves on Oct. 25: "Our Centenary community has been affected by two tragic deaths in the past week. Centenary employee, Monica Henderson, mourns the death of her cousin Elliott Jefferson, and student Chris Champion mourns the loss of his mother in South Korea last week. Our thoughts and prayers are with these in our Centenary family during these difficult times."


FROM THE SUGGESTION BOX

Recycle your printer cartridges. In the interest of environmental preservation, the IT Department has instituted a printer cartridge recycling program. When you replace your laser printer toner cartridge or your ink jet cartridge, simply drop it off at the front desk of the library. Faculty and staff can submit a service request at http://www.centenary.edu/it/service.html for an IT representative to come to their office to pick it up. Thank you for your assistance in keeping toxic waste out of our landfill.
