Ross Smith Piano Recital Nov. 19 to Feature Rachmaninoff, Rzewski and World Premiere of Dysfunctional Harmony

SHREVEPORT, LA — Dr. Ross Smith, associate professor of music at Centenary College, will present a piano recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in Anderson Auditorium of the Hurley Music Building.

This concert will include Rachmaninoff’s Sonata No. 1 in d minor, which has the story of Faust as a programmatic context, and American composer Frederic Rzewski’s Winnsboro Cotton Mills Blues, which employs a special palette of sounds that resemble the mechanical din of the cotton mill, then breaks out into old-fashioned blues.

A highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of a work by Centenary composition professor Dr. Todd Gabriel, entitled Dysfunctional Harmony. Featuring a wide range of rhythms, from Latin syncopations to cosmic profundities to wild perpetual motion, this piece was written especially for Dr. Smith.

The recital is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Hurley School of Music at 869-5235.
