Junior League Hosts River Cities Youth Summit at Centenary Oct. 29

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier, Inc. will offer its second annual River Cities Youth Summit on Friday, Oct. 29 from 8 a.m. -1:30 p.m. in the Centenary College Fitness Center.

The Summit will serve as a cultural awareness and tolerance training program and is open to middle school students from Caddo and Bossier parish. Public and private schools have been invited to select attending students based on their leadership skills among peers.

This one-day seminar is designed to teach middle school students prejudice-awareness as well as how to develop creative community-building solutions to biases. Community leaders and volunteers will interact closely with the students in small group settings to meet the following objectives:

  • To nurture the middle school student’s sense of individual self-worth;
  • To encourage acceptance and appreciation of our differences and to discover the value of differences;
  • To promote ways in which all people can live together and cooperate to increase the quality of life in today’s society;
  • To create a safe environment for expression without judgment or ridicule that youth feel they are denied in society;
  • To address “isms” and stereotypes in society and how they impact the lives of people in our own communities;
  • To provide participants with a vocabulary and a basis for appreciating the value of differences in their school environments.

For more information regarding the Youth Summit, contact Miranda Zolot at 318-773-9043 or the League Office at 318-221-6144.
